Does Michigan tax lottery winnings?

Yes. Michigan taxes lottery prizes as ordinary income, at a flat 4.25% in 2026. Michigan withholds 4.25% for state tax when the prize is paid. For a large prize, that covers most of the state tax you will owe.

Detroit and some other Michigan cities levy a local income tax (not included).

Check city tax before treating the result as your budget

On $1 million of cash the state-only estimate is $42,500 at 4.25%, plus federal tax $320,000. The resulting $637,500 excludes Michigan personal exemptions, credits and city income tax. The calculator has no Michigan city selector: a resident of Detroit or another taxing city needs to check that city’s rules before using this as a spending figure.

For comparison, a $10,000 cash prize on top of $60,000 of other income adds $1,550 in federal tax and $425 in modeled Michigan tax, leaving $8,025 from the prize. The estimate subtracts tax on the existing income so that only the prize’s additional tax is charged.
